On Tuesday evening, the award winning carnatic singer TM Krishna’s concert at the country capital on November 17, organised by Airports Authority of India in collaboration with SPIC MACAY, was cancelled all of a sudden. This action was allegedly sparked off by a volley of hate messages from the Hindutva force, asking AAI to cancel the concert.

Although AAI has not cited this very reason, sources confirm that the concert was cancelled due to threats from Hindutva force. AAI cited the reason of non availability which seems funny.

“We would like to inform that due to some urgent engagements, ‘Dance and Music in the Park’ programme jointly organized by #AAI and @spicmacay, scheduled for 17th & 18th November, 2018 has been postponed and new dates would be shared shortly. Inconvenience caused is regretted,” AAI tweeted on November 13, four days ahead of the concert.

On 9th of November, the same AAI had invited people to join the concert on Twitter. “#AAI cordially invites you to a Carnatic vocal performance by @tmkrishna who will be accompanied by R.K. Shriramkumar on violin, Praveen Sparsh on Mridangam & Anirudh Athreya on Kanjira – on 17th November in the 2nd edition of ‘Dance & Music in the Park’ at Nehru Park, Delhi,” AAI had tweeted.

“Words like urban naxal, presstitute, anti Indian are created by ppl who don’t know what democracy is. They want to scare you&make other people angry at you. They are using these reasons today to stop a festival,” Carnatic singer TM Krishna told the ANI.

Krishna is used to such threats and trolls and he never gave in before such barbarism. Earlier when he was targetted for his music on Jesus, it made him even stronger.

“Considering the vile comments and threats issued by many on social media regarding Karnatik compositions on Jesus, I announce here that I will be releasing one karnatik song every month on Jesus or Allah. T.M. Krishna,” Krishna had tweeted after getting threat calls.

Following news that his concert was called off by the AAI, several people came in support of Krishna and condemned the move.

Writer and Historian Ramachandra Guha termed the cancellation as barbarism. “When a scholar like myself is stopped from speaking, that is intolerance. When a great musician like TM Krishna is prevented from performing, it is not intolerance, but barbarism,” he tweeted. He wrote his piece in favour of Krishna in The Indian Express.

Good news is that AAP has stepped into host the concert in national capital. According to the sources, the Delhi government on Thursday reached out to Carnatic singer TM Krishna after his weekend concert in the city was called off by the sponsors Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Thursday, allegedly after the singer was targeted by Hindutva trolls on social media.

Manish Sisodia, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s deputy, who is also the culture minister, is personally in touch with the singer and “will be happy to help out,” sources have confirmed.
