Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid was on Monday shot at by an unidentified man outside the Constitution Club in New Delhi, police said.
At 2 p.m., when Khalid was entering the premises to attend an event titled ‘Towards A Freedom Without Fear,’ a man appeared from behind in the crowd and aimed a pistol at him, police said.
Eyewitnesses said the man opened fire but the bullet missed Khalid. However, the police said, the man whipped out a pistol but didn’t open fire.
“We are checking CCTVs installed at the gate of the club to identify the attacker,” said a police official.
The incident occurred in a high security area just ahead of Independence Day.

Senior Journalist Shekhar Gupta tweeted:
The attack on Umar Khalid in the most high-security zone of Delhi is as shocking as it is, depressingly, predictable. Just what can happen when you whip up hate against individuals you disagree with. Not sure TV warriors will still introspect https://t.co/ojzrHkinE2

A man shot at Umar Khalid of JNU at the Const Club (where he organised a program against hate & fear) & ran away after throwing his pistol. Police can’t nab him in this High security zone! BJP MP Lekhi calls it drama but can’t get police to arrest culprit! https://t.co/axgh0Zvq8J

Shocking and highly condemnable: a guy attacked Umar Khalid from behind and tried to shoot him in Delhi. This is the direct result of hatred whipped up by Republic TV & other hate media. I spoke to Umar. He’s okay, but we should be very very worried about his safety.
