Twitter sees thousands of tweets in support of beef eating in Tamil Nadu, India

A unique kind of trends was experienced today afternoon when the Twitterati flock to the micro social networking site to express their solidarity for a boy who was thrashed over a Facebook post sharing his photograph consuming beef soup in Tamil Nadu.

“A 24-year-old man in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu was assaulted, allegedly by a gang of four of his village, after he posted a photo of himself consuming beef soup on his Facebook account with a caption saying that he relished it. He was hospitalised,” The Hindu reported.

According to the report, the incident occurred at Poravachery village in the Kilvelur police station limits around 7 p.m. on Thursday. Police have detained N. Dinesh Kumar (28), R. Agathian (29) A. Ganesh Kumar (27) and M. Mohankumar (28).

Police sources said Dinesh Kumar is a member of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam and a local level office-bearer of the party.

After the news got viral, people started condemning violence over beef consumption as beef eating is a common phenomenon in Tamil Nadu. Brahmins even are found slaughtering cows and eating beef in Tamil Nadu, sources say.

Apart from sharing messages with their tweets, people also shared so many memes and photographs of dishes made of beef.
