JNU Student Leader Umar Khalid shot at, escapes unhurt, India stand in solidarity

Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid was on Monday shot at by an unidentified man outside the Constitution Club in New Delhi, police said.

At 2 p.m., when Khalid was entering the premises to attend an event titled ‘Towards A Freedom Without Fear,’ a man appeared from behind in the crowd and aimed a pistol at him, police said.

Eyewitnesses said the man opened fire but the bullet missed Khalid. However, the police said, the man whipped out a pistol but didn’t open fire.

“We are checking CCTVs installed at the gate of the club to identify the attacker,” said a police official.

The incident occurred in a high security area just ahead of Independence Day.
